Peeling back the onion is a common phrase in the
counseling/therapy world. It is the process of peeling back the layers of your
life to get to the core of the issues you are working to resolve. Some onions are
peeled quickly, others take a while, and there are those times where you
revisit one your onions. Meaning, there
was more work to do on said subject. In
my experiences, there have been times I thought I had an onion peeled only to
have something happen and remind me there were a few more layers I needed to
peel.
The reality is that we are all works in progress. That’s why I snicker at people that say they
are totally content and have no baggage at all.
There is one word for that comment, denial! Peeling back the onion is a great life
experience. It means you are engaged and
seeking answers, so get to peeling my friends.
