Thought of the Day 10/4/09

Marshall Mead aka M&M

“People come into our lives for a reason. Embrace and love them while they are there.” – Rodney Williams

I’m out doing my Harley thing yesterday, and the phone rings. It’s Laura with Johnny (her younger brother), Dorothy (Johnny’s girlfriend) and Marshall. They were coming back from bowling and asked if I wanted to meet them for lunch. Marshall gets out of the Jeep smiling from ear-to-ear. He walks up to me, introduces himself, shakes my hand, gives me a strong hug, lays his head on my shoulder, and kisses me on the shoulder. Before you think something about a guy kissing me on the shoulder, let me tell you a little about Marshall.

Marshall Mead is approximately 30 years old. He is blonde headed, maybe 150 lbs, has a few scars, and one BIG smile. He lives at the Avondale Group Home. He was raised by his grandmother and ended up in the home when she passed. Marshall has some mental challenges that stem from his childhood. He has no living family that interacts with him. Laura and Johnny are the closest thing to family Marshall knows. Marshall works at the Center for the Retarded on West Dallas making bags. He told me he makes smalls, mediums, and larges and sometimes gets bored when there is no work at the center. One of the proudest days of his life was the day he brought home his biggest check for $161. Marshall likes to laugh, give you the thumbs up and repeats himself a little but that’s just Marshall. He carries a full size calendar and marker with him to mark the important dates. He was arranging for his next outing with Laura and Johnny and of course asked me to come too. We had a nice lunch then went down to the Dollar Store. He proceeded to tell he needed some air freshener as his roomy had been “passing gas.” Yep! I laughed.

From there he wanted to go to Starbucks for a coffee and to use his gift card. I rode the bike down there and was waiting outside for them. Again, Marshall gets out of the Jeep, shakes my hand, is smiling ear-to-ear, hugs me, and kisses me on the shoulder again.
While we were there, he was talking to every employee there. He pretty much will talk to anyone that will listen to him and say hi to everyone. Kinda like me… I’m standing there talking to Johnny and Marshall says “I like this place…I would to work here.” Before I knew it, I’m laughing yet again as he is asking them if they have any openings and wanted an application.

I know that may be a little more than you wanted to read, but I wanted you to know Marshall’s background. There is one more thing you need to know about Marshall. Yesterday was the first time I’d ever met him. Sure, Laura and Johnny talked about him, but I’d never met him. So the ear to ear smile, the hand shake, the hug and the kiss on the shoulder came from his heart. He did not know me from Adam yet he was loving and genuine to a total stranger.

Yesterday may have been my first time to meet Marshall, but it will not be my last time to see him. He changed my life with some of the simple things I talk about often: a smile, a kiss, and a hug. Isn’t that the way we should all be?

Thank you M & M!

Action Item – Change a life today. Make that phone to someone you miss. Smile at someone, give them a kiss, or a hug. Tell someone you care about that you love them. Watch the difference you make.
