What Are You Gonna Do Next, Rod?
As a contractor, there is always the possibility today could be my last day on a project. That choice can be made by me or by the company that retained me as a contractor. As a Committee Chairman with my rodeo committee, my three year term is about to an end. In both instances, I get asked with regularity; what are you gonna do next, Rod? My answer is the same for both; “I don’t know.” Honestly, I really don’t know what I will do next when this current project is completed and my Chairman’s term is up. I have some thoughts on what I might do, but I really don’t know what I will do. My answer tends rattle a lot of people as they view it as irresponsible or non committal. That’s not the case at all. I see it as being totally responsible as I honestly do not know what I will do next.
I distinguish the “what I know” and “what I don’t know” with one simple thing: time. My biggest energy drains have come from fretting over past events or worrying too much about what comes next. The past is done and finished, and the present has not happened. So I am left with what is happening. Whether is wondering what I will do when this project ends or what I will do 5 minutes from now, the answer is the same: “I don’t know.” The only correct answer to any future event is “I don’t know.” Get in touch with your inner “I don’t know” and take a level of stress and frustration out of your life.
My name is Rodney Wayne Williams and I don’t know! Have a fabulous day!
