The World According to Me - Thursday Edition

Can You See It?

During a recent dinner discussion, the topic of influence/impression came up primarily in the context of how what you see and hear can determine your day. Can you see all the actions and events around you that influence you and possibly determine the direction of your day?

I decided a long time ago to stop watching the news or reading the paper. Without fail, they always start off with some type of negative or depressing story, and I choose to avoid that type of influence. Think about all of the commercials and catch lines you’ve heard over the years. There is a ton of science that goes in to making commercials and catch phrases to target an audience. There are psychologists, behavioral scientists, and sociologists that work along with the creative teams to develop “a package” to influence and leave an impression. At this very moment, the following tag line came to mind: “The best part of waking up is Folger’s in your cup.” Now I have not seen that commercial in years, but it obviously left an impression on me.

I believe you set your tone for the day by the first thing you do, say, or think when you wake up. When I open my eyes, I smile and say thank you for waking up. I then go through the things I am and will be thankful for to set the tone for my day. Sure there are mornings I wake up and think about how sore I am from yoga the previous day or am little off level from allergies or something, but I still say thank you. Rather than thinking about being sore from yoga, I redirect my thinking to thank you for giving me the opportunity of a yoga practice, thank you for the allergies instead of the flu, etc. Do you recall hearing and using the phrase: they are at that impressionable age? It is normally heard in the context of actions and words around kids as they are growing up. As I have thought more about that phrase, I’m convinced that every age is an impressionable age. There is always something out there that can influence you or leave an impression. It’s no secret that I write and do things to influence and leave an impression. It’s not subliminal or subtle. I’m very open about it. I share my happy moments, my less than happy moments, my hurting moments and my fulfilling moments. I use my gifts of inspiration and writing to influence and impress people to think and live the best life they possibly can.

As you go through this day, remember that something you say or do will influence someone or leave an impression. Use your “powers” to make a difference in their lives in a positive way. John Maxwell states it best in my opinion: “The purest form of leadership is influence.”
