Get To or Have To?
I have to go to work. I have to make the bed. I have to cook dinner. I have to insert subject. If you wanna get right down to it, you don’t have to do anything. Now there are consequences for not doing certain things. If you don’t breathe, you die. If you don’t put gas in the car, you go nowhere.
In true switch word form, I practice replacing have to with get to. I get to talk to new people, I get to drink a Starbucks every morning, I get to work, and I get to cook a meal. For me, using get instead of have keeps me thinking along the lines of all the privileges I get to enjoy in life. Distinguishing between have and get may seem trivial, but it is always the small things that have the biggest impact, in my opinion. I’d rather have 10 small moments in a day than one big WOW moment. Reason being, the small ones keep me engaged in thinking and doing positive things. A smile and a laugh with Craig or Rebecca at SBs, carries me until I get to the office for the Happy Friday with the guards, which carries me to the morning joke with Borris and Ronnie, which carries me to the smiles for sending out the TOD. See how it works when you “get to rather than have to?” It’s all a matter of perspective.
Action Item – Just one time today, replace “have to” with “get to.” I am 100% certain that little task will make you smile. And that little switch word exercise just changed your thinking didn’t it. And the reason I bold the words? Your eyes are unconsciously drawn to them. That’s a neat little trick I learned a long time ago.
