Gentlemen, Start Your Conversation
I’m at Starbucks writing this morning when Ethan brings over a five-foot stack of coffee cups and sits them beside me, “Here’s your trophy for the day.” Actually, the cups fell over on the floor so they have to go in the trash. People are walking in looking at me with the confused look. One guy just pointed and raised his brow. One woman walked in, cocked her head to the side, and said, “Tower of cups?” It is not like I need a reason to talk to people, but what a conversation starter to be sitting in a chair, using another chair as a table for the computer and a five-foot stack of cups to my right. Props help start conversations, but I’ve found the best conversation to be eye contact. If someone looks in my general direction, I typically say hi. Sometimes they respond, sometimes they look at me funny, and sometimes they do nothing but continue walking. I can tell you though that some of my best learning experiences started with me sitting in a chair at Starbucks and just saying HI. I have learned to initiate rather than wait.
Say hi to a stranger today. You never know what that little two-letter word will bring to your life.
Rodney - Hi!
