Say It!

Four Letter Words

Two of my favorite four letter words are beer and free.  Now when I run across FREE COLD BEER, I know it will be a great day.  There is another four-letter word out there that I like but seems to scare a lot of other people.  Care to give it a guess?  The answer is HELP.  The word help seems to unnerve some people.  The most common reason is some believe asking for help is admitting failure or not having the ability to do something.

A classic example is the guy that attempts to pick up something up way too heavy for one person.  Rather than ask for help lifting the object, Mr. Ego will convince him he is manly enough to lift it himself only to end up with pulled muscles in his back.  But hey, he lifted the heavy object for all his friends to see how strong he is.  Now he ends up asking a doctor for help in the form of pain medication and possibly therapy.  We pay a mechanic to fix our car because we do not have the expertise.  The examples are endless.  Our emotional train runs off the tracks yet we will internalize rather than ask for help.  We get into a temporary financial bind but won’t ask for help because we are embarrassed.  Again, the examples are endless.  What makes the logic funny is we convince ourselves paying for help is ok but asking for help is not.

HELP is a good four-letter word in my opinion.  Asking means you recognize your limitations in certain instances.  A day does not go by where I do not ask for some type of help.  Whether it is asking for an opinion, or can you give me a hug as I’m having a tough day, I ask.  Asking for help also engages someone else in your life.  They get a benefit from helping too.  Remember, we all want and desire to be needed.

I NEED FREE COLD BEER.  Can you HELP me?  See how easy it is to use four letter words?
