The Mark

High performance racing vehicles have a mark on the steering wheel to provide a visual indicator of when the steering wheel is on center, and the vehicle is tracking straight. I have the same mark on the steering wheel in my truck. So the obvious question is why do we need a mark on the steering wheel to tell a driver they are going straight? In normal conditions, the mark is not needed, but in the world of racing, events are happening so fast the senses can get overloaded. Drivers need all the help they can get at 200+ mph. Think of the times you said, “It just happened so fast…I didn’t have any time to react.” There are days I would like to have a mark to keep me centered. On most days, it is pretty easy to keep centered and tracking straight down the road. Then there are days where life drops in so many distractions that I find myself heading off in a ditch. My steering wheel of life ends up at the 3 or 9 o’clock mark rather than at 1 or 11.

Life is full of distractions. That is what makes it so interesting to me. It is so easy to over-steer or over-correct and end up on the opposite of the road. Is your normal state to steer from 3 to 9 or 1 to 11? Learning to keep an eye on the mark helps keep us tracking straight and in the center of the lane.
