Truth in Advertising
Isn’t it funny how we will get miffed over a smoking deal ad on furniture or a car, only to find when we get there that there was one only? Typically, the first words out of our mouths are deceptive advertising or bait and switch. That’s funny to me as every one of us have participated in deceptive advertising at some point in our lives. Does this sound familiar, “he/she turned out to be a wacko…after dating for a few months he/she was nothing like they said they were.”
Face it we are deceptive advertisers sometimes. We dress a certain way to get attention. We say what we think the other person wants to hear at the time. Some drive high dollar cars they really can’t afford just to get attention. If you think I’m off base, go on of the online dating web sites and take a look at the profiles. “If you’re married or separated, keep looking…if your picture is ten years old; don’t bother…if you are a playa, keep looking…” Those are all responses to false advertising. All men are horned up pigs wanting one thing, and all women are gold diggers. There, now that I have the silly sweeping generalizations out of the way, let’s move on.
False advertising takes a ton of effort and energy yet people still do it. We get what we give, and if we are deceptive on what we are advertising, we will get the same thing back. When was the last time you proofed or updated your ad? A quick test is to look at who is in your life. If you don’t like what you see around you, maybe it’s time to update your ad.
