A Piece in the Machine

I ramble often about The Machine.  The Machine is different from The Man :).  I’m talking about Corporate America.  I had a long conversation with a friend yesterday about how their job continues to ask for a take more and more from her every day.  In their case, it is at the point where it is impacting their health and well-being.  Working more hours is now the norm, and she and her coworkers are looked down upon if they do not work the extra hours.  I certainly understand there are times we all have to kick in a little more than usual, but when the anomaly becomes the norm, something is wrong.

I get comments about being lucky to be in a position to work when I want or that is must be nice to have money in the bank and not have to worry about working.  Early on when I made the decision, I used to get a little uncomfortable when people would make those comments like I had something to be ashamed of when in reality, it has zero to do with luck or having money in the bank, it was a conscious decision that I made.  I stopped worrying and wondering and started living.

If you spend more time dreading going to the job or experiencing stress at home due to being gone and working too much, you might be a Piece in the Machine.  If you get that uncomfortable feeling when you are driving in to work, you might be a Piece in the Machine.  Fortunately,   I am encountering more and more people these days that are becoming aware there is more to life than being a piece in the machine.  I chose to enjoy my life rather than allow The Machine run it for me.  If you wanna know how to do it, call me.  Become your own Machine rather than a Piece in The Machine.
