Lesson Plan

Teachable Moments

I heard the term Teachable Moments used in lieu of Lessons Learned.  No matter which term is used, there is some type of takeaway moment from every encounter.  It is not always apparent at the time, but it will come to you at some point.  I can remember one right now that I learned when we lived in Pasadena in 1966, and I was in elementary school.  My Dad always taught me to check a trunk when you close it by trying to lift it up.  I did that on the trunk of a Cadillac when I was in third grade.  Little did I know that trunk lids on Caddys had closing mechanism that pulled the truck lid down all the way.  Yep, you guessed it.  My fingers were mashed.  I still check trunk lids, but I wait a few seconds.  That Teachable Moment has been with me for a very long time.

There is something to be learned each day.  In fact, I put that question out each morning when I wake up, “What will I learn today?”  I’m looking forward to my Teachable Moments for today.
