Shush...I'm Listening

Boy, the things I hear when it is quiet in the house.  No TV or stereo are on, but I still hear lots of things.  I hear the ceiling fans, I hear the blinds moving from the fans, I hear the fan running in my computer, and I hear the wind whistling a little in the fireplace.  Even though the house is considered quiet by most standards, I can still hear a lot as I choose to listen to my surroundings.  Listening increases awareness and awareness gets you more in tune with the world around you.  It’s that whole paying attention thing.

On any given day, I venture to guess I encounter a minimum of a dozen people either enthralled in their electronic device of choice or totally clueless to the world around them.  Even when I ride, the stationary bike with the headphones on, I can still hear the music at the gym in the background along with the machine two down from me clicking.  Again, it is a matter of being aware and listening.

Take a little challenge to see what all you can pick up.  When you go to bed, close your eyes and just listen for a few minutes and make mental notes of everything you hear.  If you can get a few minutes alone at home, sit down and do the same.  I think you will be totally shocked at all the things going on around you that you have missed before.  Increase you awareness and watch what happens.
