An Abundance of Them

Typically, I use the word abundance when referencing all the good things in life.  After all, one definition of abundance is an extremely plentiful or over sufficient quantity or supply.  When it comes to the great people and blessings in and on my life, I certainly do have an abundance of them.  Today though, I’m using abundance in the context of reasons or excuses we have and use for not going after our dreams or calling, “I’m too busy at work…the kids take up all my time…I don’t have the money…I’m not good enough…blah blah blah!

There are indeed an abundance of excuses for why we put off chasing our dreams and desires.  I am not suggesting dropping everything and chasing your dreams and desires with wreck less abandon, but  what are we waiting for, to grow old and wear an adult diaper while we sit in the chair complaining about our health?  Especially funny to me are the people that take a shot at you while making up another excuse for themselves, “Well I’m not independently wealthy like you…and able to work when I want like you do…”  That was one the excuse of the day from last week.  My response, “I’m not independently wealthy, I won’t apologize for where I’m at in life, and if I don’t work, I don’t get paid…I just made a choice to be a contractor rather than a piece in the machine called Corporate America.”
Here is what I’ve discovered.  We typically make excuses because we are insecure, lack confidence in our ability, or are scared of risk.  I’ve also found that when we are put in position of risk and uncertainty, we typically perform at a different level.  There is an article making its way around the internet right now about the top five regrets people listed when on their deathbed.  Rather than a list of five, wouldn’t it be so much better to just say, “I lived and loved my life to the best of my ability…I had an abundance of friends, family, and wonderful experiences…so, Nah I’m good…”
