I ran across a term that hit home with me, emotional
quicksand. There have been plenty of
times, and will be more I’m sure, where I’ve felt I was sinking in the
emotional quicksand of things from my past. My sinking feeling typically
happens, because of my inner fixer/rescuer that thinks I can indeed fix
everything, rather than realizing that some things just cannot be fixed and
need to be accepted for what they are or put in a different place where they no
longer haunt me. Judith Sills, Ph.D., sums it up quite nicely: “We don't get over the
past. We get past it.”
The next time that
sinking feeling of the emotional quicksand hits you, think about Judith’s
words.
