I recall cutting my left index finger bad enough that I had to get stitches and wear a splint for a few weeks. Once I could not use my finger, I found out quickly how much I really did use it. Two of the simple things we do daily, tying shoes and buttoning a shirt, became quite the challenge. I literally had to watch myself attempt these activities a few times before I adapted to a new way of doing things. When I had my hip replaced, I had to adapt and change how I traveled up and down the stairs at the house.
There are things that happen daily where you have zero control of the situation, but you have total control on how you react. If there is a train stopped on the tracks, you have a choice of whining about it or finding an alternate route. Someone says or does something that hurts your feelings and again, you have a choice. You can lash out at them and stay in the situation, or you can choose to avoid giving any energy to said situation and walk off. Over the years, I’ve learned that being able to adapt is one of the best skills you can have. So, how adaptable are you?
