There are days I wear out the backspace key on my keyboard when I am frazzled or frustrated. I do not hold things in. For me, it works better when I type it out rather than speak it. Seeing the words on the screen, gives my brain an opportunity to process what I am feeling. Here is where the backspace key comes in to play. I write it, walk away for a bit, come back, read it, and if I’m done processing, I delete it. Why? There is no reason to rehash or revisit the nonsense once I’m done. Internalizing things is unhealthy. Think about it this way.
You need to throw up, and you cover your mouth and nose so it has nowhere to go. Your body is telling you there is some badness inside it needs to get out, but you won’t let it. Next, you get that burning feeling inside from the stomach acid, and it gets worse until you have no choice but to let it all out. By this time your throat is burning from the acid, you have the dry heaves, and you want it all to end. That is how I see internalizing. Holding things in does nothing but fester and make you sick. Whether you write it or talk it out, get it out and be done with it.
