The Great Fairy Tale
“Strive for change, not perfection. There is a difference.” – Rodney Williams
As mentioned the other day, I’m reading a book called Happy For No Reason. Marci refers to a number of Myths regarding being happy for no particular reason. I like to refer them as the Great Fairy Tales.
Prior to starting the fairy tale, I should probably give you a little detail on what exactly Happy For No Reason is and means. Per Marci, it is”… a neurophysiological state of peace and well being that is not dependent on external resources…It’s not tied to a given emotion. You live life from happiness rather than for happiness.” It is indeed a quantifiable state that can be measured and is attainable by anyone. There are tons of sources of scientific research if you care to read it.
Happy for No Reason people are the ones you want to be around. You know who they are. They are ones that radiate positive energy. The room lights up when they walk in. They put a smile on your face when you see them. They are the ones you enjoy time with as they share their energy and can pick you up even on the roughest of days. You know them as the ones I talk about often. The “there is something about you but I can’t quite put my finger on it but I like being around you” people.
And now little childrens, it’s time for the first fairly tale called: “I’ll Be Happy When.”
I’ll be happy when I lose 10 pounds…
I’ll be happy when I get that raise…
I’ll be happy when I can move…
I’ll be happy when I get my bills paid off…
I’ll be happy when I find a girlfriend…
I’ll be happy when my divorce is final…
I’ll be when the kids are grown and gone.
I’ll be happy when FILL IN THE BLANK!
Need I go on? I didn’t think so. In the I’ll Be Happy When world, you either experience only temporary gratification or disappointment when it does not work out like you have it pictured in your melon. Why? All the studies and research show that we are just not that good at predicting the future happiness we will feel when “I’ll Be Happy When” comes along. We tend to embellish how we think it will be and get disappointed when the actual event does not match the picture in our head. And the vicious circle I’ll Be Happy When continues. How do you break the circle? You work to live for the now, and the rest will happen when it is supposed to happen. And that little childrens is the fairy tale called: I’ll Be Happy When.” THE END!
We all can be Happy For No Reason people. It takes more than a change in your thinking. It takes work on redefining you. We all have the ability to change. It is documented. It’s called “brain plasticity.” Your brain is capable of rewiring and remapping itself. Look up brain plasticity or I have lots of detail on that subject if you want it. When you decide you want to be a Happy For No Reason person, you have taken the very first step. You decided!
Action Item – Fess up! What is your current “I’ll Be Happy When” Fairy Tale? Now go back to the following sentence: “You live life from happiness rather than for happiness.” Remember those two good “F” words: from and for.

When I picked up the mail yesterday, there was one in there from the hospital. I figured it was one of the bills from my surgery a few weeks ago. Nuh Uh! It was a check for a refund of $338.68. That’s something you don’t see often. At least I have beer money for my lil Harley trip this weekend. Well beer money for Friday night anyway. J
