Thought of the Day 9/22/09

Tough Decisions

“Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. ” - Marcel Morin

One of my main reasons for writing the TODs is to help people think and live life in a little different way. Not every TOD is going to be a happy…happy…joy…joy topic, but it will be something that makes you think.

In the last week alone, I’ve communicated with five different people in positions where they needed to make some tough decisions in their life, and yes they were all relationship related. Two are/were dating situations, one was a work situation, and two were marriage/divorce situations. Now you know why the last week or so of TODs has been related to conflict avoidance, priorities, living complaint free, the past and how it impacts your present, and being left wanting. I did not plan it that way, but that’s how the words came to me. Do you see the common thread in the TODs? There are certain decisions in life that are just tough, and there is no way around. Breakups, divorce, kid issues, etc. are all tough.

I acknowledge these to be tough and will not attempt to sugar coat them. I also acknowledge the pain associated with them can be “better managed” by saying what your heart tells you rather than what you think the other person wants to hear. STAY OUT OF THE OTHER PERSON'S HEAD! Take the time to listen and ask questions in a thoughtful and kind way rather than throwing verbal spears and eye daggers. When you feel your ego sliding up to say something mean or sarcastic, stop for a minute. And it is indeed ok to ask the other party to give you a minute to find the right words. Those few minutes of silence can save hours and days of hurt from harsh words. If they raise their voice, let them finish before responding. Remember, it takes two to fight and argue. There will always be tough decisions, but it is up to you as to what “level of toughness.”

Action Item – Tough decisions are part of life, but they do not have to wreck or control your life. If you have some tough ones to make, ask someone for help. A different perspective sometimes softens/lessens the level of “the tough decisions.”
