Thought of the Day 9/27/09

Want to Try a Sample?

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

While we were strolling through downtown Fredericksburg yesterday, I noticed most every shop had some type of samples. There were wine samples, beer samples, lots of hot sauce samples and seasoning samples. What’s the purpose of the samples? The merchant wants to draw you in the store in hopes of you buying their products. The ole try it before you buy it. As usual, sampling the beer and hot sauce got me to pondering. If you think about it, sampling is in most all aspects of life. We test drive cars before we buy them. We sample a wine at an eatery before we buy the bottle. You try that sample of chicken at Sam’s Club before buying a 5 lb bag.

Did you ever think that we also sample people and relationships? Think about it for a minute. What is a friendship? It starts with an introduction at which point you are sampling to see if you have things in common with this person or group to see if you want to develop it further. You’re sampling.

What exactly is dating? It’s sampling the other person. You meet someone of interest, you talk, you spend time together, you touch, you kiss, etc. You are sampling each other’s chemistry, physical and emotional attraction, energy, and likes/dislikes, to determine if both parties want to take things beyond sampling. In some instances, you know at the first meeting or date as you do or don’t have the initial click. Then there are other times you are just unsure. Dr. Cloud, in How to Get a Date Worth Keeping, recommends a second date in most instances as there is so much self imposed pressure by the ego on first meeting/dates. Now if the second sample goes nicely, then you decide if you want to move past sampling. Now if you are a compulsive dater/sampler, then something else is going on in your ole melon. But that’s another topic for another day. Try it before you buy allows you the opportunity to see if you like something or someone without making an impulse decision that you rethink later.
