Thought of the Day 9/4/09

The List

“The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps - we must step up the stairs.” – Vance Hayner

I was watching The Bucket List again the other night for the 3rd time. I seem to pick up a little something different each time I see it. For those that have not seen it, the movie stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. It’s about two older men that are terminally ill. They come up with The Bucket List. It’s the list of all the things they want to do before they die. Their list is comprised of 18 things to do before they day. Sure there are some of the typical things you would think like drive a Shelby, see the Great Wall of China, skydive, and get a tattoo. In my opinion though, the top three are the most meaningful on the list.

Witness something truly majestic
Help a complete stranger for the common good
Laugh till I cry

I would hope you are thinking about another list y’all have seen before. It’s a few years old but very relevant.

Make a Difference in Someone’s Life. It can be something as simple as a smile, a hug, a kind word, a handshake, or a hand out.
Learn at Least One New Thing. Life presents so many opportunities to learn. Just keep your eyes open and listen.
Meet at Least One New Person. Say hello to a stranger. Ya never know what you will learn from that chance encounter.

Do you recognize it now? It’s my personal daily action item list. I’ve printed it a number of times and preach it often. I’ve been doing these things each day for a couple of years now.

I know it was just a movie, but I see such a deeper meaning in the story. Why do people wait when they could be doing the things now? You hear so many people say “I wished I woulda done this or that BUT….” Yes I have a list of things I still want to do. I just added one three letter word that totally changes it all: YET. Add YET to the things on your list and just watch the difference in how you feel about it. It changes from something on a list to something attainable.

Action Item – What’s on your list?
