Thought of the Day 9/7/09

You Don’t Know Me

“Much of the success of life depends upon keeping one's mind open to opportunity and seizing it when it comes.” - Alice Foote MacDougall

I heard the Ray Charles’ version of You Don’t Know Me at Starbucks and started wondering back to the days of when I had walls and façade’s all around me. We all have/had some level of walls and façade’s for various reasons. Having lived with them for 35+ years, I’m pretty good at spotting them in others now and I do snicker when people say “how did you know.” When you build and maintain them long enough, you just learn to spot them. You also learn to spot when there are chinks in the walls and time for them to come down. From my experience, most are tied to the past and are some convoluted form of protectionism we have convinced ourself we need.

I’m not suggesting that your life needs to be a 100% open book. There are some things that are personal and need to stay that way. But the more open you are the more open people will be with you. Exposing who you are gives those in your world a chance to learn from you and you from them. I see different perspectives/opinions as learning opportunities. You may say something that triggers something in the other person where they ask you how you dealt with a situation. That opens the opportunity to help someone. The same can happen on your side. I learn something new every day as I choose to, and I hope those I interact with learn something from me. We are all connected in the universe but yet so different and unique in our experiences.

Action Item – Identify just one of your walls or façades and see if you can determine the source. From there, just take one little piece down for now. Next week, we will work on taking off another piece.
