“Change is inevitable, growth is optional” – Overheard at Starbucks
Today’s title is what my friend Robin Ellis said to me as I was describing my time with the soldiers at Ft. Bliss and the feelings of the experience. I’ve been thinking a lot about those five words. How often do we go through life just “not getting” certain parts of life? Why do certain people come into our life, why do people leave our life, why do we change jobs, why do we move, etc.? It comes down to one word: change.
As today’s quote puts it, change is inevitable, growth is optional. For me, the not getting it comes from resisting the growth opportunity as I sometimes just don’t or choose not to see the opportunity at the time. I get hung up in my ego and insecurities. The times I’m just not getting it tend to come back to my default nature to try and problem solve and rationalize, when sometimes there is no problem to solve or anything to rationalize. It comes down to just listening, accepting and living it. I believe that every encounter we have is opportunity to change and grow. The trick is being open enough to receive it and putting the ego and insecurities aside.
