The Source

The Source

“We teach people how to treat us.” – Dr. Phil

I was watching a program with a prominent therapist and world renowned minister. They were discussing depression along with the other challenges we sometimes face and how to work through them. The minister made some comments that really caught my attention.

“We as ministers and counselors don’t have the answers to your challenges…In fact, do you know the mark of a good counselor or therapist…they are the ones that can get you to the source of the issues to find the answers…do you know where The Source is…It’s Inside You…a good counselor or therapists helps you uncover and work through whatever is happening inside you…”

He went on to talk about how we continue doing the same things, attract the same types of people, get into the same types relationships with people that remind us of someone in our past, and all because we have not gotten to The Source. We repeat, and we develop patterns until we get to The Source. He also talked about the healing process. He said.

“Unless you get divine intervention…you need to get help from someone else…a counselor, therapist, minister, or whatever…you can’t do it all on your own…”

I’ll pull back the curtain on my life again. I know from my personal experience that no movement occurred on my issues until I crashed and burned hard and relinquished to the fact that I needed help. As I sat at the computer one Sunday afternoon, I just kept thinking, I can’t do this anymore. I started looking on line for therapists in my area. I ran across one within a mile of my house: Jamie Leonard. I sent her an email that I needed help. In less than 30 minutes, I got a response that she could see me the next day. That was October 2, 2006.

I saw Jamie twice a week for 8 months then went to once a week for a number of months than every other week then stopped. We got to The Source pretty quickly. As she put it: “I’ve never seen someone move through this stuff so fast…it’s like you are on the accelerated program…” The truth was that I just didn’t want “it” any longer, and once I found someone to help me get to The Source, my life changed. The rest of the time was working through the things and just retuning my life.

When I stopped writing the TODs last month, I went back to see Jamie once. That was the first time in several years. We did not discuss anything earth shattering or uncover any new “stuff”. I just needed to reconnect with someone that helped me learn how to work through the things life hands us. Having the right resources and tools in your life makes all the difference in the work to stay focused on The Source.
