My Words For Tuesday

December 8th – Closer Than You Think

“Your purpose may not always be obvious, but always remember that you do have a purpose.” – Rodney Williams.

I write and talk often about how we are all connected. I choose to believe we all have a purpose in each other’s lives. Sometimes those connections are not always obvious to us, but sooner or later, the time presents itself to see the importance of the connection. Here is just a little example of how a 16 yr old, Josh, connected some people that probably would have otherwise never crossed paths, and he does not even know how instrumental he was or is in changing a little piece of the world and connecting some strangers.

Last night I had a wonderful dinner and few hours of great conversation with Ruben and Linda. I would guess you are thinking “well it’s nice that you had a good dinner and talked, but what does have to do with being closer than you think?” Well, last night was the first time Ruben, Linda, and I had ever met in person. They live in Sealy and I live inside the loop. What are the odds that we would randomly meet? We’re not in the same business, they don’t ride Harleys, and we do not run in the same circles yet we have something in common: we know Josh.

Ruben and I met “electronically” some months back. It came about in an email from Teri and indirectly by way of Josh. Ruben is a retired professional boxer that teaches boxing and mixed martial arts through his ministry called A Fighting Chance Ministry. As y’all know, I have a pretty extensive background in martial arts myself along with a new path in life, so Ruben’s ministry got my attention. The purpose of the program is to give kids a place to learn some skills, bond with other kids, let off some steam and to learn a little about the good Lord. The ministry is not how Ruben and Linda make their living. It is just his calling in life. Josh has been going to Ruben’s gym for some time now. He drives from Katy to Sealy to work out. That right there shows you the good work Ruben is doing and the impact he has on Josh.

Recently, an opportunity presented itself where I was able to help Ruben move his ministry to the next level. The irony of it all is that we still had never met and talked on the phone one time yet we knew each other. Last night we finally put the keystrokes with the faces. It was not a meeting of strangers but more like three people that just had not seen each other in a while. The circle that began with a 16 yr. old named Josh had been completed. His interest in letting off a little steam and learning mixed martial arts had brought together three strangers. The right people come into our lives at the right time. Like I said earlier, the connection may not always be obvious at the time but it will indeed present itself at the right time.

To Josh I say thank you for being the catalyst for bringing me to know Ruben and Linda. To Teri I say thank you for being the messenger between us all. To the good Lord, thank you for bringing the right people into my life at the right time.

Always remember that everyone has a purpose in our respective lives. Sometimes that purpose is “closer than you think.” Keep your eyes and heart open and watch the wonderful things that happen in your life.
