Thought for Monday

It’s Too Loud! Turn It Down!

At 9:48 pm last night, my eyes popped open from a deep sleep. Nope! It was not a phone call, a knock on the door or loud noise. It was the silence that woke me up. The power went out in the neighborhood. I was not hearing the white noise from my fan. The unusual silence was deafening to me. The quiet was louder than turning the volume up to 10+ on the stereo. As I lay there, I started listening for what was different. I could hear the rain drops falling down the gutter in rhythm. I could hear the wind blowing just a little and could hear the rain dancing across the skylight in the living room. In a bit I heard people outside talking about the outage. The outage lasted about 20 minutes then I heard the comforting sound of my fan coming back on.

While I was hearing the loudness of the silence, I began thinking about the quiet time we all need each day. We all need a few minutes each day to just listen. What should we be listening to or for? We should be listening to what our spirit is communicating to us. I strive to set aside at least 15 minutes a day to just quiet time to listen. It’s typically a little down time in the bubba chair after I’ve walked at the park or worked out at the gym. I found I’m a little more receptive to what my spirit and the good Lord are trying to communicate to me in those little snip-its of time when my mind is not racing. Honestly, there are sometimes when I think I am hearing totally nothing. There are times I feel like I get every single word. There are other times where I feel like I am only getting parts and pieces. My dear friend Ticia explained it to me this way when I was telling her I felt like I was missing part of it: “Rod, you are told everything you need to know at that point in time…”

She was so right. All the answers are presented to us when we learn how to really listen. Be sure to set aside a little time each day to get quiet and just see what you hear. I’ve found that my spirit and the good Lord are very direct when I ask questions. I get yes or no answers. I recall recently asking numerous about a situation in my life: “is my time done and is it for me leave?” The answer I got every single time I asked was the same: “you’re not finished Rodney, you need to be patient.” And yes I did indeed fight the answer at first, but the response was more direct and louder as I continued asking the question over a period of weeks. Once I got my ego out of the way and finally listened, things fell into place.

There is so much to learn when you take a little time to just listen to what your spirit is trying to communicate to you. Set aside an amount of time each day to just get quiet and listen. You will be amazed at what you hear.
