Words for the Day

December 29th – Radical Departure

Revolution: a sudden, radical, or complete change
– Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I’m reading a book by Joyce Meyer called The Love Revolution. As the title implies, it is indeed about relational love but more than just in the sense of boy/girl relationships. It is about love and relationships with everyone in the world, and how big parts of the world are missing said love. Joyce uses the term revolution as a call to action for all of us as we all have the ability to make a difference. How many times have you heard someone, especially politicians say: “what we NEED to do…what we SHOULD do…” Rather than talking about change, we have to be the change we want to see in the world. That change can be in the form of a random act of kindness, kind words to someone in need, just listening to someone going through a tough time, etc. The act of love and kindness means nothing without acting on it.

As I was getting ready for work this morning, I was thinking about revolution in terms of the upcoming year and the traditional resolutions we make. According to a recent survey by FranklinCovey, here are the top three resolutions for 2010:

1. Improve financial situation
2. Lose weight
3. Develop a healthy habit (healthy eating, exercise, etc)

And yes for 2009, they were indeed the same ones. I think you should indeed concentrate on your health and be financial secure/stable, but I’m thinking we need a revolution on resolutions. Make some sudden, radical, and complete changes to the traditional resolutions. In addition to working on ourselves, why don’t we add some resolutions to working on the world around us? Here are a few that came to mind for me.

1. Every morning before you leave your house, take a moment to tell everyone in the house that you love them. Repetition engrains it in their heart. As I say often, don’t assume they know, make sure they know you love them.
2. Clean out your closets and donate the items to a local church or charity.
3. Empty your change jar and give the money to a charity or use it to help someone struggling to pay a bill.
4. Every morning when you wake up, verbalize the first five things that come to you mind that you are thankful for. Again, repetition engrains it in your heart.
5. Set a goal to meet someone new each week.
6. Use your professional skills to help others. If you are computer guy like me, help someone learn how to use their computer.
7. Work to resolve open issues or hurts from your past. When you free yourself from the past, you can move forward in a positive and loving way.
8. Strive to see the sand paper moments in life where you can help smooth out someone, or they can help you.
9. Work on binocular vision, the ability to see through the other person’s eyes, rather monocular vision where you only see things in your world and from your viewpoint.
10. Recite the following every day: “I am someone’s blessing.”
