January 2nd – Why Wait?

“Clearing out clutter leads to clarity.”
– Rodney Williams

Spring cleaning is the traditional annual event for getting rid of things around the house that are no longer needed, used, or wanted. Personally, I work to keep a spring cleaning mentality year round as I prefer to get rid of things I no longer need, want, or use regularly. It keeps my house free of clutter plus puts the things in the hands of others that can use them.

I believe in applying year round spring cleaning to our hearts and heads too. We have a tendency to let clutter build up in both. The clutter is usually in the form of less than good memories of the past, a grudge, ill feelings in the heart from conflicts/arguments, etc. Like stuff in the house, the clutter does nothing but take up valuable room in your heart and head. Clutter takes up valuable storage space in your head and heart where you could be storing more good and positive memories. Sure there are things and events in our lives that are unpleasant and leave a mark on us, but we have the choice on how long to hold on to the clutter. Letting go of the clutter does not minimize or diminish the memories or their importance in your life at the time, it just means you are letting go of it.

There are lots of ways to work at keeping the heart/head clutter to a manageable level. For me, I journal, write my thoughts of the day, meditate, read, pray, and talk. Those are the tools that work for me. There are lots of other ways to work with it. The important thing to remember is to just do it with whatever tools help you. Don’t let the heart/head clutter build up on you. Do regular and often spring cleaning year round. It does indeed make a difference.
