What is the Takeaway?
“If I had my life to live again, I’d make the same mistakes only, sooner.” – Tallulah Bankhead
I’ve made a few million of them, maybe more, and am certain more are coming my way. I’m not talking about widgets or gizmos. I’m talking about mistakes. Whether it is some insecure ego driven set of words or math error in my checkbook, I’m gonna make a mistake. Heck, I’m sure I will make a few today. When I make mistakes, there is a choice to be made. I can choose to wallow in them and beat myself up, or I can ask the question in today’s title. What is the takeaway? What learning opportunity exists in my mistakes to ensure they do not become less than favorable habits?
Some of my mistakes were fun and some left a significant mark on me or someone in my life. I would say my biggest mistakes came from my own hand, ego, and head. There have been way too many times where I did indeed wallow in my mistakes and even made the same mistake again. The repeats for me tend to happen when I do not listen to my spirit when it is telling me not to do something. And on the other end of the spectrum, there were others where I was able to say “Yep Rod, you messed up on that one...but it’s done and you can’t change it…what’s the takeaway…” and move past it.
All too often, we go through life expending tons of energy on trying to avoid mistakes rather than seeing them as part of life. They are indeed going to happen. That just comes with the territory. It gets back to that acceptance thing. As I say often, time is the most valuable thing in life as it cannot be replaced. Strive to look for the takeaway rather than dwelling on the mistake. If you accept that mistakes are just a part of life, you free up space and time to do what you were designed to do: live a loving, abundant and meaningful life.
