Make That Turn

Orientation

I’m a big fan of the unplanned. Yesterday at church, we decided to have a little pot luck, Valentine’s get together at my house. I’m standing in my kitchen talking and cooking and looked through my window at my neighbor’s house and could see Jason sitting at the table in his kitchen. I smiled and turned to the people in the kitchen and said: “I’m gonna go invite the neighbors over.” That’s exactly what I did. I rang the doorbell and Jason walked out. I told him we were having an unplanned deal and to come on over. I could tell he was caught off guard but in a good way. He said he was waiting for Jamie, his wife, to get home.

Not 10 minutes later, Jason is walking up the stairs. I noticed him looking at the art work I have along with the painted accent walIs went over to talk with him a little and he made a comment about how totally different my place was from their unit. That was a little funny to me as our floor plans are identical with the exception of the orientation. When you come up my stairs, you turn right into the living area. In their unit, you turn to the left. Jamie came in a few minutes later and was commenting about the same thing. They both were seeing things totally different in my house as opposed to theirs, and it all was based on the orientation.

I began thinking more on how their view of my house was totally different from the view of their house and all based on a turn. If you think about it for a minute though, that is really how we should look at life. All too often, we get comfortable with the way things are. We stay within our circle of friends. We drive the same identical way to work every morning. We eat the same things. With that comfort though, we also miss a lot of opportunities to see something new, meet someone new, and enjoy a new experience. Change your orientation today. One little turn can change your life for the better.
