Saturday's Collection of Words

Five Hours

My flight Thursday to San Diego was delayed five hours due to weather in Dallas where our plane was located. The cause of the delay was snow and ice in Dallas. There was the usual amount of eye rolling and snide remarks when the first one hour delay was announced. There were also those trying to change flights to make other connections. As hour two went by then three came about, the line got longer and tempers shorter. I was thinking about all the wasted energy happening in the area. The gate staff did not control the weather. They don’t plan these events.

Then I saw the other group of “us.” We were the ones chatting, telling stories, shaking hands and making friends. We were the ones that chose to use the time wisely rather than fret over what we could not change. I met a restaurant owner from San Diego that was trying to get home from the New Orleans Super Bowl parties. I met an Army soldier waiting on his flight and did indeed take the time to shake his hand and say thank you. I wrote two thoughts of the day, said a few prayers, emailed and texted, practiced some of my Body Talk procedures, took care of some rodeo issues, sold some rodeo tickets, passed along some responses to Teri’s prayer request on Wednesday, wrote three pages in my Gratitude journal and had a bit to eat. I chose to do something with the time. In five hours, I did all the things above while the others just sat in their chairs steaming in their frustration. Who came out on the winning end? They stewed about things they could not control or change, and “we” did something with the time. Winner!

Five seconds or five hours, it is my time. I can’t get either back and have every choice on what to do with it. Choose to be constructive, remember each second is a blessing and just love it. It’s the only time and only life you have. Use it wisely.
