Presto Change-O!
I still smile when I get to experience things changing right in front of my eyes. That’s when I truly know I’m living in the moment. Last night was a big series of changes in a few short hours.
Teri and I planned to have dinner then take in a movie last night. When she got to the house, she said she was whipped from a long and stressful day at work and did not have the energy to sit through a movie. We decided to have dinner and skip the movie. There was the usual discussion about what to eat and where to go. We ran through the usual options then narrowed our criteria to mexican food and trying some place new for both of us, and off we went. We indeed ended up at a eatery by the house that was new to both of us. We went to the table, and I asked Teri to order me a marg while I made a pit stop. When I came back, she said I ordered the margs and went ahead and ordered us some cheese dip too.
We’re looking at the menus and checking out the normal stuff we order. When Jose’ (I knew his name because I asked and shook his hand when we were seated) came up to take our order, we were still thinking on what to get. Jose’ was telling us about some of their signature dishes and in comes another idea to my lil old head. I asked him what he liked, and we could tell he was not used to that question. I then looked over at Teri and said “why don’t we let Jose’ pick for us?” She grinned and said I’ve never done that. I looked up at Jose’ and asked him to pick two dishes that he liked then asked if anyone had ever done that and he said no. And I had never done that either. Now we were experiencing another new thing amongst all three of us.
Teri and I started chatting and ended up discussing some topics at levels we had never discussed before. There were some funny moments, some sad moments, some mad moments and some crying moments. We were experiencing some things we that were new to both of us. It’s not often we get to experience all of the emotions in one conversation. There it was, yet another new thing for us.
The food showed up and we dug in. Jose’ selected a soft taco selection and a chicken topped with veges selection. We ate it all so obviously, Jose’ made some good selections. Teri is not a big vege eater so for her to be trying something new with veges was yet another little change.
We talked some more about some other new topics and had another marg. Again, there was the range of emotions all over the map. We wrapped up talking and dinner and asked for the check. I tipped Jose’ heavy and that was a change for him too. We headed home, had a little more discussion then Teri left.
Last night in a few short hours, there were a series of big changes. We tried new things, we talked on a new level, we experienced some new things with Jose’, and we experienced some new things between “us”. This is huge for both of us as Teri’s life can be pretty intense sometime being a single mother, raising two kids, and working in a high pressure industry. I have been blessed to be in a position to have simplified my life to where “I” live in the moment a fair amount of time. On a Friday in February of 2010, I lived a little in Teri’s world of stress and chaos (her word not mine) and she lived a little in my world of simplicity. “We” were living in the moment.
That’s what it’s all about my friends. Go out and have you own little Presto Change-O moment. Take a chance and just wing it. Talk about something that’s uncomfortable. Try a new place that is out of the norm. Just live in that moment as that moment is all you really have. Everything else has happened or is coming. Enjoy the one you have in front of you.
Thank you, Teri for living in the moment with me last night!
