The 5th Set of Words for February 2010

Will it Matter?

I read an interesting article the other day on what I will term importance. Do you remember how spun up you got the last time someone cut you off in traffic? Can you recall the feeling you had the last time you had a significant argument with someone? How upset were you when you came out to find a scratch on your car? Each example does one thing to you. It takes some of your energy. Now how much it takes is internally negotiable. Meaning, we have the choice to decide the amount of energy being given to any event in our life.

Now think about each one of the examples above with one little twist. How important will it be in one year? Will you even recall the day that you were spun up about traffic? Will that argument matter? That scratch has probably been buffed out, or maybe you will have a new vehicle.

We expend a lot of energy on the wrong things a lot of times. That’s just what we do. We are impatient by nature and want instant gratification. To be patient, takes effort and practice. I can go days and weeks sometimes then just have a period where I spin out of control all due to impatience or due to an outcome not being as I desired. In most cases when I look back at the “spin out”, it really wasn’t that big a deal after all. I’m pretty dang certain I won’t remember it next year. Ask that one simple question the next time you feel the big spin coming. Will it matter?
