Just Say It
“Do you want me to be honest...In all honesty…To tell the truth…” We’ve all said or heard those lines at some point or another, but have you ever really thought about what they mean or imply? If you have to ask me if I want an honest answer from you, does that mean you were going to be less than truthful or try to sugarcoat something?
Here is the real answer that I’ve discovered in my little world. People get scared and afraid of hurting my feelings when a sensitive subject is discussed. They try to choose words to craft the response they want to hear from me. In their minds, they are trying to protect me when in actuality; they are firing up my defenses. I can pretty much sense when someone is picking their words thinking they are protecting me and will just ask, “Are you saying what you really want to say to me?” I’ve found that can take the edge off of them thinking they will say something to hurt or offend me. I like the way Jamie put it a long time ago when I was learning about communication: “get out of their head and let them draw their own conclusions.”
I still get uncomfortable with certain topics of discussion like everyone else. I’m no different; however, I’ve also learned those certain topics get easier to discuss when I speak from my heart. Why! The “receiver” in the conversation knows when I am being genuine even though we are touching on tough subjects. The first quote of mine that was ever published was: “When you speak from the heart, the right words come to you.” Learn to Just Say It, and watch your world change for the better.
