Wednesday's "Thinking"

Overrated

Lauren posted the following comment on Facebook yesterday: “hummmm unsure on what to think about things at the moment.” I responded with: “thinkin makes your head hurt.” There is an old phrase that pretty much sums it up - “paralysis by analysis.” Meaning, you can indeed over-think something to the point that you pretty much freeze up.

I know some of my biggest headaches, literally, have come from over-thinking. My ego may not be getting the answer it wants so off I go into hyper-processing trying to analyze something until my ego gets the answer it wants. I over-analyze a lot of times. Part of that just comes from being an engineer and always looking for the answer. I know when I’m doing it and am fully aware of what is going on. Sometimes I do well at halting the over-analyzing, and sometimes I do indeed have a process interrupt and have to reboot. I’ve also started asking those close to me to jump in when I’m doing it.

Over-thinking can give you a massive temple pounder headache. The answers are sometimes right in front of you, but they may not be the answers you want to see or hear. No matter how much processing and internal spin work your head and ego try to do, the real answer will ultimately become apparent.

Thanks Lauren for reminding me that sometimes thinking is indeed overrated.
