The Distance
Well I caught myself doing it the other day too. I was texting rather than talking out at the rodeo. I find it humorous how our pea brains convince us that texting is more efficient and easier than talking to someone. In my little experiments, I’ve counted roughly six text messages to get a point across that could have been addressed with one phone call. That does not include any additional texting/emails due to misinterpretation of a message. That can add another layer of messages and complexity. The concerning part to me is that the art of verbal communication is losing ground to texting and email.
I’m not sure we all realize what goes on when we choose to text/email others as our primary form of communication rather than having a conversation on the phone or face-to-face. I know for me it is summed up with one word: distance. I find myself feeling distance and a little disconnect happening when people text/email me as their primary form of communication. It gets back to “the connection” that we all desire to have in life, and for me, texting and email just doesn’t cut it. Electronic communication just puts distance in my life with people, and I don’t like it.
I know I have had some distance issues with a few in the group lately too. I told Nora, Sally, and Judi I was feeling the disconnect and needed to resync. Nora and Sonya have both said they need some Rod Time to visit and talk. I told Teri I felt distance between her and I. We all feel it ripple through the group. You know it and I know it. You may not be able to put your finger on it, but you feel it. That’s just the way the connection works. When those connections are strained, we all feel the distance.
I propose a challenge for all of us. Just once each day for the next week, make that phone call or go see someone rather than sending that text or email. Let those close to you know that distance is unacceptable. Talking to or seeing someone in person will raise the energy level for both of you. When you feel it, we all feel it. Close the distance today.
