I Don't Have a Clue

What’s Next?

My current work project is entering the final phase and will be wrapping up sometime in the 4th quarter. “What are you going to do next, Rod?” I’m getting that question from a lot of people. My answer is pretty simple. “I don’t know, and I’m ok with that.” That answer really seems to concern and worry a lot of people, but I’m ok with it. It’s not that I’m filthy rich, but I do have enough in the bank for beer, gas for the Harley, and Starbucks.

Not knowing what’s next is actually a little exciting for me. Sure there are things I could do and know of opportunities out there, but why should I focus energies on things that could change between now and then? For so many years, I was the planner and fixer for not only me but everyone else in my life. When things would not go exactly as I had them planned in my head, I would get all wiggy and bent out of shape and start doing the silly root cause analysis engineer thing. I recall laughing at my sister: “Don’t make me drop the P word (planning) on you!”

I am still an engineer at my core and understand and accept that fact. I’ve just learned to work with him rather than allowing him and my pesky ego to run everything. Sure they are involved in my life, sometimes too much, but we all try to coexist and be one big happy family. Engineer Rod does jump up and down screaming for a plan. Ego Rod does question me about getting that check every two weeks. I’m ok with it Rod also jumps in and just says let’s see what happens…there will plenty of problems to solve later Engineer Rod and you have some money in the bank Ego Rod so can’t we just try it my way and see what happens? Yes those are indeed some of the things that run through my head, and I’m ok with it.

We tend to burn way too much energy on trying to find all the answers rather than allowing them to happen. To borrow a few words from Teri: “just let things be and see what happens.” She’s a smart girl that Teri.
