What's On Your List?

The List

“Flying a fighter jet, driving a race car, jumping out of a plane, taking a ride in a helicopter…are you sick or dying?” I’ve had a few people ask me that very question. It seems some of my upcoming adventures are the kinds of things typically seen on a Bucket List. For those that may not have heard the term, a Bucket List is a list of things or events you want to accomplish before you leave this world.

To answer the question, no I am not sick or dying. What I am doing is just enjoying my life. The funny part about all of these events is that the only event that has really been planned is the race car driving. That was a gift from Teri for my birthday last year. Everything else on the list has just sort of appeared in my life.

I have a consistent entry each day in my gratitude journal: “Thank you for every event and person in my life.” I choose to believe that every event and person has purpose in my life. I may not always see it at the time, but I strive to stay true to the belief there is indeed purpose. I used to question, quite a bit in fact, why some people are/were in my life or why certain things happen or have happened. I’ve modified that a little and rather than ask why, I ask a simple question: “what am I supposed to do with this?” Sometimes the answer is immediate and sometimes it takes a while. What I have found though is that by changing one word from why to what, everything that happens in my life has taken on a different appearance. For me asking what means I accept rather than question the person or event. Yes I do still ask the “why” or play the “what if” game but not near as much as I used to.

As for my bucket list, I have one thing on it: “Enjoy my life to the best of my ability. It’s the only one I have.”
