Pay The Troll The Toll
“It’s for Me, and you can put it in the blog?” Sandra sent me that text regarding the thought yesterday on the power of words and sarcasm. When she read it, it brought her back to some very sharp and hurtful words she delivered to someone. She sent me a follow up note indicating she had contacted the other person to apologize for her choice of words and how much of a burden she felt was lifted when she did it. She validated what I talk about often. You pay a heavy toll to the Ego Troll for holding on to anger, hurt, frustration, etc. The Ego Troll loves taking your energy. There is no way around it. Unfortunately, we typically do not know the price we’re paying while we’re holding it. We know and feel something is off and making us tired but can’t seem to nail it down sometimes.
I was having some issues “hearing” the words for yesterday’s thought, but what I did here was “take a look back Rodney…you’ve written something in the past that someone needs today.” The original version of Choose Wisely was written in 2008 and was based on a discussion with Stacey about the power of words. I updated it a little to reflect what I’ve learned in the years since the conversation, but the concept is still spot on. We can’t control how someone else’s Ego Troll will interpret what we say, but we can be mindful about the words we use to ensure it’s not just a gimmie to Mr. Troll.
If you feel like something is sucking your energy, that’s probably Mr. Troll sitting there just laughing at how much you are giving him. Honestly, I did it this week based on something I heard over the past weekend. It wasn’t until I wrote this one that I realized how much I was giving him. Heck, I think I was paying him overtime plus commission. He pissed now because I just cut him off. I know the Ego Troll lives with me around the clock, but it is my choice on how much I choose to support him. I think I will give him a pay cut. How about you?
