Carry Forward
I was talking with a dear friend the other day about a less than favorable and plain rude text she received from someone. It was laced with sarcasm and profanity. She thought she had deleted it, but as she was checking her phone before going to bed, she saw it and read it again. She woke up this next morning in a not so good mood. Why? She had gone to bed with the nasty message on her mind, and it carried forward to the next day.
Some people read before bed, some watch a little television, and some have a dialog with their spouse or a family member. We all need to use caution with what we are exposed to before going to bed as “it” goes to sleep with us. Your brain will process, your ego with do its little dance, and before you know it, you are waking up thinking about whatever it is again. It has carried forward to the next day.
If you go to bed angry, upset, or hurt, chances are you will have a restless night and wake up with the “stuff” still on your mind and in your heart. Most everything I’ve read on meditation and brain processing, says the same thing about sleep. It’s the old adage of garbage in – garbage out. The research recommends you start winding down at least 30 minutes prior to going to bed. That means skipping the scary movie, avoiding an argument, or reading something positive or uplifting. You want the last input source prior to bed to be a good one. Personally, I use my Holosync meditation CDs and listen to them 30 minutes prior to bed. It helps me shed the nonsense and chatter from the day. If I’m watching TV and fall asleep in the bubba chair, I try to ensure the program is something positive. Even though I might be asleep, my brain is still processing what I am hearing. The last time I fell asleep in the chair I made sure Bishop T.D. Jakes was on. If I read, it is something out of the Bible or one of my self-improvement books.
I look at my brain as a big sponge that absorbs everything around me. That’s why I put effort into ensuring whatever I absorb is the best thing for me. I strive to ensure what I carry forward is something that will make my world and the world of those around me just a little bit better. Last night I went to bed with memories and smiles of Lauren texting me to tell me the dresser/changing table that I got her for the nursery had arrived. I could feel her smiles and excitement. And at 4 something AM on a Thursday morning, I’m smiling just thinking about Lauren’s excitement and smiles. That’s what I carried forward today.
