We all have internal buttons. You know the ones I mean. Someone can say or do something that triggers a response which can be anything from anger to crying. “You know which buttons to push.” We’ve all heard that one. From my experience, I’ve either pushed the buttons of others or had others push mine for one simple reason. I felt I was being attacked which led to retaliation on my part.
When you do an internet search on retaliation, it directs you to the root word retaliate, which means to take revenge. When you follow the redirect to revenge, you see the following definition: Revenge (also known as vengeance) is a harmful action against a person or group as a response to a real or perceived grievance.
These buttons are really funny things when you boil it down. A button is nothing more than a word, set of words, or maybe a touch that solicits a less than favorable response. Now drill down a little further for a second. What is your response based on? Something from your past defined the button. So when you bring it all together, a button is a word or words that we assign power to based on a past experience that solicits a retaliatory response in the present. Buttons seem a little silly when you look at it from that angle, don’t they. In one of the final scenes of the original movie The Matrix, there are agents shooting at Neo. He just puts his hand out and stops the bullets in mid air with a simple word: No. What had worked in the past with the agents, no longer worked on Neo. The past no longer worked in the present moment.
We are the keepers of our buttons. We determine the power they have, how long they stay, and the best of all, we decide on the response. Rather than retaliate, respond with one single word: No!
