All Around Us

The Obligation

One of my favorite subjects to discuss and write about is people. I’m talking about the people placed in our lives. When I meet someone new or have a chance encounter, a little question fires off in my head. What am I supposed to do for or be for this person? You notice I use what rather than why as the why is immaterial. My personal belief is God places people in our lives or daily paths for a very specific reason even though it may not be obvious at that very instant. They are in our lives whether it is for 30 seconds or for a lifetime. I see it as the obligation.

What is an obligation? Per the internet dictionaries, an obligation is the act of binding oneself by a social, legal or moral tie to someone. Some see an obligation as a chore or something negative. I choose to see it as an opportunity. We are already tied to each other in the universe. Every person connected to me is also connected to everyone I’m connected with and vice versa. It’s not debatable. That’s just the way it is. Whether you choose to live up to or fulfill your obligations is totally up to you.

“How are you doing today? Wow, no one ever asks me that question. I’m doing great, thank you for asking.” That was a 10 second conversation I had on the phone with a customer service representative. I asked how she was doing immediately after she asked how she could direct my call. You can see by her response that my five words made a difference in her day. If it was a smile or a mood change, it really does not matter nor will I ever know. All I do know is I fulfilled my obligation with that person in 10 seconds.

I now have a lifetime obligation with someone the good Lord placed in my life. His name is Tristen James Foster. No matter what direction my life takes or what direction Lauren and Tristen’s lives take, I’m with them and they are with me for a lifetime. It’s not debatable. That’s just the way it is. There are many lessons for me to learn from them and them to learn from me. It’s the obligation.

So how do you see them? Are your obligations a chore or an opportunity? Rather than ask why, just ask what. Take some time to get quiet and search your heart. The answer will come to you.
