Redundantly Redundant
“I’m not paranoid…why is everyone out to get me!” I get a kick out of the previous quote. I do not recall where I heard it but it is so appropriate. Being a technologist, I clearly understand the importance of redundancy. I keep my data files on a jump drive along with backups of the files on two different computers. Am I paranoid or just prepared? I choose to believe it is being prepared. So you may ask what data could possibly have so much importance that multiple backups are required.
No the data is not the launch code to the missiles or my financial accounts and access passwords. The data on my jump drive consists of my journals, my book and my pictures or summed up, my life and memories. Of everything on the drive, I find the pictures to be the most valuable to me. I still look at events from the beginning of this new chapter of my life up to now. I like remembering the people and events in my life. Some of the people are no longer there, but I still have the pictures and memories. They are nice reminders of my wonderful life.
I’ve seen way too many instances of people losing data from not having a backup of their files. In fact, I recently attempted to help a friend recover some files on her jump drive, but they were gone. All the files had been erased some way or another. She did not have a backup of the files. Luckily, most of the information could be recreated and there were copies of some of the pictures online on Facebook. The irony was she too saw the pictures as the most valuable files on the drive.
Are you redundantly redundant? Do you have copies of you pictures somewhere? Jump drives are cheap. You can get them for less than $10 at most any store. Surely, your memories are worth more than $10? Go forth and be redundant.
