Do They Really Exist?
“I want a do-over.” “I was given a second chance.” “Give me another chance.”
The phrases above recently occupied a fair amount of time in the big clump of gray matter in my head known as the ole brain. Actually, I was a little conflicted by the statements. They all mean the same thing. I want another opportunity on any given subject. I am a firm believer in the concept of living in the moment. We cannot change the past and do not know the future which leaves us with what is happening at this very second. Even if you get another opportunity in a relationship, a job, or sporting event, the second attempt is not the same as the first one. How could it be the same? Time does not repeat. Each second is a unique and one-time event.
As I thought more on the subject, I think I convinced myself there is no such thing as a do-over or second chance. Situations and events occur the way they should and at the time, they should. If a relationship ends, then you attempt to reengage later, would you consider it a second chance or new opportunity? I would call it a new opportunity as both of you would be in different places and have new experiences since the original relationship. Do you really get a second chance at a job or a new opportunity?
We all make mistakes in life. The key to mistakes, in my opinion, is what you learn from them and how you recover. If you grow from the experience and take away new knowledge, I contend you will not need a do-over or second chance. So I pose the question, do they really exist?
They do exist but not in the way we want them to. You can't change something that happened. You can seek forgiveness and even be forgiven for an error, but the error exists.
