It Takes Work
“Patience - the gift of being able to see past the emotion.” - Rodney Williams
I wrote the quote above about a year ago. I recall I was really wrestling with impatience on some issues in my life at the time. Back then, the impatience monster was winning as I was spinning up and sometimes out of control on a regular basis. It was a damn beating. Even though I knew better and knew the logic behind impatience, I still did it to myself. Did you catch the last part of the previous sentence: “I still did it to myself?”
I find my patience shifts to impatience with the introduction of that pesky emotion called anger/frustration. I also experience bouts of impatience when I am stressed in situations. My primary reaction when my patience is shifting is to get quiet; however, I can also get abrupt if I continue to get pushed. My physical “tells” are I look down at the ground, put my hand over my mouth, or rub the back of my neck. I also get a tingling feeling in the left side of my neck. Very seldom am I blindsided by impatience as I know my signs and tells very well. I work at. I view the shift from patience to impatience just like other shifts in life. It comes down to where I choose to put my energy. No one can take our energy unless we allow it to happen. Short of a medical condition, happiness, sadness, anger, or any other emotional experience is a choice in my opinion.
Learn to see the signs and the tells. The next time you experience impatience, take a few seconds to note what happens to you. As you become more in tune with the signs, you learn how to redirect the energy back to where it belongs. It takes work, but the results are priceless.
