It Depends

“What would you do if insert subject?  I don’t know. It depends.”

The what would you do if and it depends games can be both fun and frustrating.  It can be fun when the subject is maybe winning the lottery. On the flipside, I have experienced people getting upset with me when I give the answer it depends to a what would you do if question.  I have a good idea of what I think I would do in certain situations, but it still depends.  Sure predictive analysis can tell you the probable outcome with certain events, but the analysis is not 100% accurate.  Life is not a controlled environment.  How could it be as there are always variables in play like your path, stress, adrenalin, kids, jobs, traffic, other people, external influence, weather, and so on.  I like the term situational awareness.  My interpretation is the ability to adapt to the situation as it is happening at a given snapshot in time (living in the moment) and carrying the life experience forward.

I’m pretty certain Sully did not have a specific training class on what would you do if a flock of birds take the engines on the jet, you lose total power, and your only option is to land in the Hudson River. He used his training/experience, adapted, and made decisions relative to the situation. 

I personally think It depends is an acceptable response to what would you do if insert subject.
