Uh Oh!

Look Around

Who can tell me what the most dangerous (unimpaired) driving activity is? Tick tock tick tock. The answer is backing up. Even with backup sensors and rear view cameras, backing up is still the most dangerous driving activity as there are still blind spots no matter how many sensors, mirrors, and cameras you have installed. When I put the truck in reverse and the camera comes up, a message still appears on the display saying to check your surroundings for safety. I still use both side mirrors, the rear view mirror, and look over my shoulder when backing up.

I believe we all have internal sensors meant to help us minimize life accidents, but we too still have blind spots. Just like a beeping backup sensor, we can sense someone coming into our personal space, bouncing up against or violating our boundaries, or the need to remove ourselves from certain situations. We know when someone gives us an uncomfortable feeling. Just like vehicles though, accidents can still occur.

I strive to listen to all of my sensors, but I still bump into things and have accidents. To me it is not if I will have one but when and how I recover from said accident. If I repeat the event with the same outcome, then I am just loony. I attempt to learn from the bump or accident and move forward with that experience.

Look around. Are you continually backing into the same situation or person with less than desired results? You may need to calibrate your sensors.
