The Power

Some will have you believe the most powerful things in the world are nuclear weapons.  Others will tell you all the power lies in money.  Sure weapons and money can totally change lives, but there is something we all posses that can do the same with little or no effort and without any money or weapons.  What is the one power we all posses that can change lives?  Do you give up?  We all posses the power of words, and depending on how they are used, we can change lives for the better, or the opposite.

“It’s so good to see you.  I’ve missed you.  I love you.  I am happy you are a part of my life.  Thank you.  You mean the world to me.”  I bet when you read the previous phrases and comments, you smiled a little, felt some good feelings and had some flashbacks of hearing those very things.  “You suck.  I don’t know what I ever saw in you.  You’re ugly.  No one would want you.  You do is make me miserable.”  I bet when you read the previous phrases and comments, you felt some sadness and had some flashbacks to hearing those very things.  In both instances, they are just collections of words, but it is the intent behind that gives them the power.

I have seen too many instances of people with emotional injuries caused from the words of others.  You may not see a visible scar, but you can see the scars left on their spirit.  As much as we would like to, we cannot change a person’s past, but we can certainly change their present with our words.  I cannot remember the source, but I do remember a very profound quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.  Use it wisely.”
