1,2,3 & 4 - Look Who Can Count

Com 101

It’s time for our annual refresher course called Com 101, which stands for Communication 101 or basic communication skills. Today’s lesson will focus on the Fundamental Components of Communication Dialog. Okay little children, let’s begin.

Fundamental Components of Communication Dialog
There are four basic parts to any communication dialog: sender, receiver, message, and feedback. Most believe the message to be the most important part of the dialog, but that is not the case. Of the four, feedback is the most important. Think about it for a second. If the message was received but not in the manner, you felt you were delivering it, then the message is useless. Think about all the times when the receiver made a comment later like, “Oh I thought you meant insert subject. When a sentence begins with “Oh I thought,” that is surefire indicator feedback was missing. When I deliver a message and am unsure if it is coming across correctly, I ask feedback trigger question like, “Does that make sense, or I’m not sure that came out right…how did it come across?” It is the old exercise of what a side versus what your heard. Feedback helps ensure what I said is indeed what you heard.
