Missed Connections
Craigslist has a section called Missed Connections. The majority of the posts are about someone seeing someone else but being too afraid to say hello. Some are so detailed they actually list the time they saw the other person and specifics on the clothing. Some even repost the same listing for a few days in a row hoping whoever will see it. The two most common words in the posts are uncertain and nervous. Rather than utter two letters, Hi, some choose to wonder. I was a master of the missed connection at one time.
I did not go so far as to place posts on the web, but I would play the mental phantom game of what if or why didn’t I. Now, I just don’t care anymore. I stopped the self-inflicted missed connections. Rather than wondering about the outcome, I just say hi and move on. If they respond, fine. If they don’t, that’s fine too. I do it for me. I am a shy introvert by nature, but I have learned how to move in and out of my comfort zone with ease. If someone walks in the coffee shop and looks my way, I say hi. When I walk through the grocery store and someone looks my way, I say hi. My unscientific research has shown that saying hi generates a smile at a minimum and a little conversation most of the time. Every encounter is an opportunity. Rather than wonder about the missed connection, say hi and experience the connection.
