Eventually

We All Need It

If you have heart issues, you go to see a specialist called a Cardiologist.  When you have challenges with your Calculus III class, you hire a specialist called a Tutor.  However, when we are having emotional, anger, stress, or grief related issues, we are reluctant to secure the services of a specialist called a Counselor or Therapist.  They too are trained professionals specializing in emotional and mental health.  Life is easy, life is hard, and life can be traumatic. We all have issues, baggage, unfinished business, or whatever term you choose to call your “stuff.”  The difference is the size of your “stuff.”  When you are emotionally/mentally healthy, your “stuff” typically fits in a backpack.  When you have issues, the “stuff” can feel like a steamer trunk on your back. If you think you are 100% baggage free, you REALLY need to see a counselor. And yes even mental health professionals also have their own counselors and therapists. Just because they are specialists does not mean they do not have the same experiences and reactions to life as the rest of us.

I believe therapy/counseling is one of the best things anyone can do in life. There are just things in life when we need a little help with from time-to-time. It does not mean we failed, it just means we need help.  It is tough for me when I see someone struggling or overwhelmed with stressful situations.  I’m not saying you run to the counselor every time you have drama in your life.  What I am saying though is when the drama becomes the norm rather than the exception, it’s time to raise your hand and ask for help.

I am proud of the time I spent in counseling with Jamie and still talk about it often.  It was a life changing season for me that came at a time where I could no longer process all the drama in my life.  Again, asking for help does not mean you failed.  It genuinely means you just need a little help.  Sooner or later, We All Need It.
